Taste-Safe Slime for Babies and Toddlers

Taste-safe slime is one of my favourite sensory play bases for babies and toddlers. It gives children the squishy, stretchy experience they love, while offering parents peace of mind during those very curious stages.

This recipe is taste-safe (not edible), meaning it is safe for small nibbles if your child is still exploring with their mouth, but it should not be eaten in large amounts.

Taste-Safe Slime Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds

  • 1/2 cup water

  • A few drops of food colouring (optional)

  • 1 cup cornflour (adjust to preference)

How to Make Taste-Safe Slime

  1. Add the chia seeds, water, and food colouring (if using) to a bowl.

  2. Mix well, then let the mixture sit for 30 minutes. This allows the chia seeds to absorb the water and create a gel-like texture.

  3. Once thickened, gradually mix in the cornflour.

  4. Adjust the texture to your liking:

    • Add more cornflour for a firmer, putty-like consistency

    • Add a small splash of water for a runnier, slime-like texture

  5. Transfer to a tray or bowl and invite your child to play.

This slime is incredibly versatile and can be used in many ways:

  • Hide small toys or objects for a sensory treasure hunt

  • Use it as a sensory play base on its own

  • Encourage squeezing, stretching, poking, and rolling for fine motor development

  • Pair with language by naming textures, colours, and actions

  • Use as a calming, focused play experience

Why Sensory Play Matters

Sensory play supports brain development by strengthening neural connections through touch, movement, and exploration. Activities like slime play help build fine motor skills, concentration, problem-solving, and emotional regulation, all through simple, child-led experiences.
